Outreach Programs

Elementary School Outreach

The Mission Valley and Toby Wells YMCAs are proud to provide complimentary physical education classes during the school year to more than 3,600 students from four elementary schools in our community. We transport each student, ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, to and from our YMCAs and the schools to receive free swim lessons and participate in sports, gymnastics, and fitness classes taught by certified instructors. These
classes not only provide the children with access to high-quality physical education, but also help kids develop social skills, self-confidence, and awareness of community resources.

The Mission Valley YMCA serves two schools:

  • Linda Vista Elementary
  • Kit Carson Elementary

Both schools have at least 80 percent of their students
qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Toby Wells YMCA also serves two schools:

  • Hancock Elementary
  • Angier Elementary

Both of these schools matriculate more than 80 percent of their student population from military families. Upon
completion of the year-long program, each participating student at these schools receive a complimentary Youth Membership to our YMCAs, allowing the students to participate fully in our other program offerings while
continuing the health and fitness activities they started through the Outreach Program.

    Monach School Outreach

The Downtown YMCA has partnered with the Monarch School to offer supplementary PE classes after the students’ school day. Students from all grades at Monarch, an accredited educational institution for homeless and “at-risk” children, participate in flag football, basketball, and fitness programs at the Downtown YMCA.

This program allows these students, learning in a
“non-traditional” setting, to pursue the same recreational opportunities afforded students at “traditional” schools.

Only with Your Help

These programs are completely funded through donations from our Annual Support Campaign.

Your generous donations have allowed us to provide more than $1.4 million to over 12,300 youth and families in the form of camp scholarships, membership aid, and
subsidized programming.

There is no charge to the schools, or
participants. For information on how to become involved, please contact Kai Dickens or Leslie Kehl, 619-298-3576

Middle School Career Luncheons

For the past few years, the Mission Valley and Downtown YMCAs have partnered with Montgomery and Mar Vista Middle Schools students to offer Career Luncheons for as many as 480 competitively selected students each year. These luncheons, held several times throughout the school year, allow the students to hear from area business professionals, screened and selected by the YMCA, about their respective career paths and educational choices.

High School Outreach

Mission Valley YMCA has started a unique program for 40 deserving students at Mark Twain High School, a continuation school and often last chance, for “at-risk” students and those with behavioral problems.

The program at Twain allows these students the opportunity to participate in physical fitness and strength training classes with a certified personal trainer. In addition, pre- and post-partum teenage mothers have the opportunity to attend specially designed classes that teach overall health and wellness for expectant mothers, focusing on the months during and after pregnancy..
